Mrs. Obama’s Dress Designer Creates Payless Shoe Line

On January 20, 2009 everybody across the United States was glued to their television sets to see the first inauguration of the now re-elected American President Barack Obama, held in Washington. But along with him, millions also noticed his better half Michelle Obama, who looked classy in a creamy yellow dress with a matching overcoat. Not many knew that Isabel Toledo was the creator of the First Lady’s much-admired dress.

Who’s Isabel Toledo and How Did Her Association with Mrs. Obama begin?

Cuban-American Isabel was an ardent sewer since a young age. She has been designing over the last 25 years and is famous in fashion circles for her impulsive sense of fabrics, patterns and fits. After a brief stint at Anne Klein as the creative director, Isabel has been designing clothes under her own name.

Toledo says that Michelle Obama bought clothes designed by her from a retail outlet without her knowledge. She was invited to a fund raising event, where she was pleasantly surprised to see Mrs. Obama dressed in one of her creations. Being impressed with her fashion sense, the First Lady asked Isabel to design a yellow and lime dress for the swearing-in ceremony, which was appreciated immensely.

Payless Asks Isabel to Design an Exclusive Shoe Line

Soon after, Toledo became an international household name and was approached by Payless ShoeSource, an American retailer popular for offering fancy footwear at discounted prices, to launch a collection of womens shoes that was unveiled in September 2010. The Toledo range was available at Payless stores across United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, Philippines, Russia and nations in the Middle East.

Isabel Toledo described her range of shoes for Payless as sophisticated, chic and modern. The chief inspiration for the designer was to create a shoe line that she could wear on a regular basis and at the same time make a bold fashion statement. The shoes, which include a blend of square heels, flats, pumps in colours like black, brown and red, are stylish yet reasonably priced.

Sticking to Payless’s objective of providing trendy and good quality footwear at discounted amounts, none of the shoes in their collection are over US$60. Isabel Toledo has done an incredible job in creating designer shoes at affordable prices and catering to the masses. And she certainly owes it to the First Lady!

Skyfall – How Jany Temime And Tom Ford Pulled Off Bond’s Signature Gear!

Those gadgets, smooth suits, and of course, the sly smirk, secret agent James Bond has been donning the tag of male fashion icon for over 50 years. But as manifested by the legends, from the hunk Sean Connery to the royal Roger Moore, and from the sexy Pierce Brosnan to the macho Daniel Craig; a few things have remained unchanged for the agent’s gear, the retro and cool, tailored and all-male look.

So when it was the time to bespeak the spy’s outfit for the upcoming (and of course the most awaited flick of 2012) Bond thriller – Skyfall, Jany Temime knew whom to approach. None other than the most sought after Tom Ford, who designed Bond’s bespoken outfits for Quantom of Solace – the 2008 blockbuster.

Together they have taken things to a new dimension and it’s going to be a treat to the eyes for bond fans to see Bond sporting overcoats, suits, tuxedos, lace-up hard leather ankle boots, custom aviator shades and sleek cuff links.

Bond’s Updated Look in Skyfall

How did Temime modernize James Bond’s elegant outfit while appreciating his classy look? ‘You cannot modify bond’s look, all you can do is update it’, and Temime was completely aware of the fact. The opening sequence of the movie is action packed.

For this thriller’s opening sequence, Tom Ford’s bond suit was created in 60 versions, 30 for the agent, and 30 for stunt double. Each piece was designed keeping in mind the needs of the scenes, for instance, when bond rides a motorbike in the flick, he wears a designer suit with long sleeves so that they don’t come back over his forearms.

Every suit was given three fittings and this was aimed at keeping it paramount class when it comes to tailoring. Light, woolen silk mohair made the first suit and the Tuxedo was designed out of woolen silk. Temime wanted to keep Bond’s pants noticeably close fitted and the boxer briefs body hugging, just for an added sex appeal.

Temime reported that the Bond moviemakers didn’t want just a business suit for Bond and were looking for sexy suits instead. As James Bond was required to show off his gritty body, the shirts in this movie were designed quite close to the body. Just to ensure that the audience can notice Bond’s cuts and macho physique!

Bond fans across the globe are anxiously waiting to get some fashion cues from his look in Skyfall, which hits theaters on these dates worldwide.

Stella McCartney for Team GB

Stella McCartney collaborated with Adidas to make the English Olympic team uniforms.  Her designs reflected England’s national identity. She made the designs unique for each athlete’s respective sports. There is a whole range of uniforms in blue missing the red colour of the flag.  “Something that was very important to me was to try and use that very iconic image but to dismantle it and try to soften it, break it down and make it more fashionable in a sense," McCartney - BBC News on 22nd March. Though there is difference in design for the uniforms of each sport, the team outfit as a whole look consistent and uniting the team spirit. But sports psychologist criticized the design for the absence of red in the outfits. They said that wearing red has shown to increase probability of victory.

Uniforms designed in red, blue and white. But they are manufactured in China. A lot of discussions are going on surrounding this controversy and NY senator, Kirsten Gillibrand has gone far to introduce a bill which would require the U.S. Olympic Committee to outfit Olympic athletes in ceremonial uniforms sewn or assembled in the United States.
